The homodimeric membrane (M) protein of SARS-CoV-2 is an O-linked glycoprotein and is most abundant amongst various structural proteins. It is a component of the viral envelope that plays a central role in virion assembly and morphogenesis via its interactions with other viral structural proteins including nucleocapsid. The binding of M to N protein stabilizes the nucleocapsid (N protein-RNA complex), as well as the internal core of virions, and thereby promotes the completion of viral assembly. It also may be involved during pathogenesis
